3M vs Avery Vinyl: What's the Difference? Choosing Vinyl for Lorry Stickers
The two vinyl brands most commonly installed for lorry stickers in Malaysia: 3M and Avery. Specs are close, but there are real differences in handling, pricing, and use case. This article breaks down spec sheets, costs, and our recommendation.
3M IJ180Cv3: industrial workhorse
3M IJ180Cv3 has become the industry default for heavy vehicle wraps. Specs: 7-year outdoor life (manufacturer warranty), 50.8-micron film, repositionable adhesive system. Strengths: high conformability around lorry contours (top and bottom body), cleaner removal after 3-5 years (less residual adhesive). Suits large fleets or prime movers that demand longevity.
Avery MPI 1105: equally premium, different feel
Avery MPI 1105 is the direct equivalent to 3M IJ180. Specs almost match: 7-year outdoor life, 60-micron film, repositionable easy-apply adhesive. Practical difference: Avery is sometimes a touch softer for extreme contouring (mirror covers, recessed panels), and retail pricing in Malaysia is occasionally a bit more competitive.
Which costs less?
For small volume (1-2 lorries), the price gap is negligible — usually RM50-100 between brands for a 3-ton lorry. For 10+ fleets, the gap accumulates. We usually quote based on stock availability from our supplier — if you have a specific brand preference, mention it in the brief.
Which handles Malaysian UV better?
Real-world test: both last 5-7 years in Malaysia with no significant fade. We've seen an 8-year-old 3M fleet still readable, and 6-year-old Avery still solid. The difference is under 5%. For decision-making, vinyl brand matters a little — installer skill matters more.
For 90% of lorries in Malaysia, both 3M and Avery overdeliver. The decision is more about availability + current pricing. We usually quote with our default brand, but we can accommodate specific requests. Want to ask which brand fits your project?
